The Grand Depot to "Palace of Consumption"

One of Philadelphia's true gems. I had no idea Wanamaker's story stretched back to the pre-Civil War era or that a pivotal moment in John Wanamaker's life was the deep faith that shaped his character. His convictions influenced the way he led, using his success to bless his employees, strengthen his community, build and support churches, and give generously to others.
After watching this video, it's difficult not to reflect on how much of that original vision seemed to fade after his death. It serves as a reminder that when a legacy loses its founding purpose and becomes focused primarily on profit, something priceless can be lost.
Sometimes we wonder what's different about life today but can't quite put our finger on it. What changes when faith, integrity, compassion, and service are no longer at the center of our lives... our homes... our schools... our businesses... and our communities?
Is that what we're left with? Where is the heart and soul of the man they once called "Pious John"? Perhaps his greatest legacy wasn't the store at all, but the faith that shaped everything he built.
Grateful to have preserved a small piece of his remarkable legacy in The Philadelphia Matriarch. Brilliant history revealed!
