A Hidden Treasure: Discovering the Little Green Earth Library

Every now and then, a destination surprises you in the most wonderful way.
At the conclusion of my recent Pennsylvania book tour, I experienced just such a place. Visiting the Little Green Earth Library in Wayne, Pennsylvania, and touring the adjoining all-native landscape was truly the icing on the cake.
Ironically, this visit began not in a garden, but on social media.
While promoting my book tour, I came across photographs posted by the remarkably talented stone mason, Devin Devine. His handcrafted stonework immediately captured my attention. I reached out, asking if he might connect me with the garden's owner. Within hours, he introduced me to Anne, and as if by magic, our mutual love of books, gardens, and lifelong learning formed an instant connection.
On a perfect Sunday afternoon, Anne welcomed me into what can only be described as a hidden sanctuary.
As we meandered along winding stone pathways, it became increasingly difficult to believe we were standing in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Towering native trees sheltered the gardens below, creating the feeling of stepping through the gate of a secret garden tucked safely away from the ordinary world.
Every turn revealed another thoughtful detail.
Hand-carved stone bowls collected rainwater, serving as tiny reservoirs where birds, butterflies, bees, deer, and countless other visitors paused for a refreshing drink. Beautiful stone benches, lovingly crafted by Devin and thoughtfully placed beneath the cooling canopy, seemed to whisper an invitation: Sit awhile. Read a book. Listen. Simply be.
Unlike the endless stretches of manicured lawns we've grown accustomed to, this landscape felt wonderfully alive. Native flowers, grasses, seedlings, and shrubs swayed gently in the breeze while sunlight danced across blossoms in ever-changing patterns. It was easy to imagine spending an entire day there—watching pollinators drift from bloom to bloom, catching a glimpse of the patient deer waiting quietly for their turn to drink, and losing all sense of time with a favorite book in hand.
As our path circled back toward the road, we arrived at Anne's delightful Little Green Earth Library.
Overflowing with books celebrating gardens, nature, wildlife, and the natural world, it reflected the same generosity and spirit found throughout her landscape. I was deeply honored to leave copies of The Philadelphia Matriarch and The Matriarch's Legacy for others to discover. Although historical fiction, both novels are rooted in my deep appreciation for Pennsylvania's beautiful gardens, parks, and landscapes, many of which quietly find their way into the pages of my stories.
Before leaving, I paused for a few moments on one of Devin's beautifully carved stone seats.
Surrounded by birdsong, native blooms, and the quiet beauty Anne has so thoughtfully cultivated, I felt completely present. There was an unmistakable sense of peace—as though the garden itself offered permission to slow down, breathe deeply, and simply appreciate the beauty that flourishes when we choose to work with nature instead of against it.
My heartfelt thanks to Anne for her gracious hospitality and for sharing this remarkable place, and to Devin, whose artistry has become such an integral part of its story. Together they have created far more than a garden or a little library. They have created a refuge—a place that inspires curiosity, invites conversation, and reminds us that books and nature have a remarkable way of nourishing the soul.
Thank you for being such faithful stewards of this good green earth.
